Activity Details:
Jamboree on the Air - Jamboree on the Internet (JOTA-JOTI) is an annual camp held on the 3rd weekend in October each year by ALL scouts and girl guides worldwide. On this weekend 2 million scout members throughout the world get on the Internet in private chat groups & radios and talk to each other.
Approximately 150 Garrigal and Northern Beaches Scouts will be camping at Terrey Hills Public School with activities organised throughout the weekend.
It is a fun and exciting annual camp for all young people in Scouts and Guides using a range of communication channels to educate, promote cultural awareness, develop tolerance, as well as enhance sharing, collaboration and teamwork, along with building a sense of belonging to the worldwide Scout and Guide Movements. It is also a great camp for learning camping and cooking skills.
Registrations - two forms:
The HQ form https://events.nsw.scouts.com.au/event/3658 if you are planning to attend, please register as early as practical as some of the programme revolves around Patrol numbers and overall headcount, which we are looking to finalise NOW.
Then also fill in this permission form.
Costs:
The HQ event permssion includes the cost to run the camp.
The Bayview cost is just for food, Friday supper, Saturday Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Sunday Breakfast, Lunch $40 cash to Mark in advance
More info:
It is a "travel-free" Jamboree that takes place wherever you are in the world. There are good amenities making it suitable for scouts new to camping and even for older cubs. Scouts will chat to other scouts worldwide, make their own electronic circuit to take home. The activities are nonstop through each day. Check out the electronics all kids got to build in past years: https://jota.uniq.com.au/electronics/
The rest of the web site includes the sessions program, etc. Camp is local for those with weekend sport commitments. Some activity sessions split into 1.5hr halves. If leaving for sport, try to time departure/return to match activities times in the roster. It is not practical to join sessions part way through. Note, once we know our roster, the radio session starts 15 min earlier as we have to walk to Terrey Hills Radio club before start time, and then back after our finish time. The 3 hour Water Activity actually starts 30 minutes before your session to travel by bus to Narrabeen Lagoon. Dress for swimming with enclosed shoes, hat, towel and water bottle.
Note, Bayview venturers who attend to help run the activities can either camp and eat with our scouts, just eat with us, or be completely independent with own camping and cooking.
Additional activity info:
Bring bag or large hike pack, raincoat, warm wind jacket, shorts, jeans, 2 shirts, sports shoes, socks, optional beanie, sun hat, sun block. Optional toiletries. Thongs are Not OK in camp. Optional pack of cards/Uno/board games. General camp gear: Head torch, sleeping
bag, under-mat (not stretcher), plate bag with plates, cup, utensils.
Wear uniform to and from. Meet at the scout hall. HAVE DINNER BEFORE WE MEET
There will be a JOTA badge, and scouts will be able to complete various communications sections of adventurous activities badges.
As our scout group already does so much canoeing and sailing kids dont enjoy the water activity provided by JOTA as much. Sometimes for the water activity we skip it, and either stay at Terrey Hills and do other badge work and games at our camp site, or we take the transport to Narrabeen but go to the rock pool instead, or even supervised jumping off the North Narrabeen road bridge foot path side pipe, if water depth is suitable.
Parents from each scout group to help with activities
On the activities rotations all scout groups are expected to provide some Parent Helpers and/or Venturers to help run the 3 hour session, not necessarily the same activity that our scout patrols are at during the session. Parents let us know if you can help. Session times Sat 9.30-12.30, Sat 2-5, Sun 9.30-12.30. We also like to have an adult go along with our patrols to each activity for supervision. The radio session requires walking the patrol to through Terrey Hills streets to the Radio Club and back later.
Travel Arrangements
Parents transport Friday night. Parents can stay and help set up camp. Park outside. Parents Sunday afternoon can arrive late morning to help pack the trailer, and some help with transport. Sometimes if the weather is good parents and leaders manage to pack up everything before 12.30. Then we can leave straight after closing parade. All parents help unpack back at Kitchener hall. We cant leave Terrey Hills until after closing parade, so we normally get away between 12.45pm and 2pm.
At Terrey Hills Public School the drop off of scouts, packs is via the school oval gate (CooyongAvenue). Friday evening parents welcome to stay and help set up camp site. (Parents can park on Cooyong Avenue, cars towing a trailer must un-hook at the entrance to the oval and the scouts/venturers will push/pull the trailer across the oval to the camp site. During the weekend pick up drop off and parent helper access is also via the Cooyong Avenue gate.
We will post estimated finish time at Kitchener-pickup as it can be quite variable.
